Creating Photo Displays that Inspire

The other day, I had some people over to shoot video for my website. I was showing them around and we were talking about the decor in my home. No surprise, I have a lot of photos displayed in a lot of different mediums, from wall galleries, to landscapes on canvas and metal, to shelves full of framed photos.

I LOVE decorating with photos, but here's my MO. I sometimes think about and look at a blank space for a LONG time before I know what I want to put there. It’s a bit of a process, but I want to be inspired.

My most recent project definitely falls into that category.

I have this alcove right outside of the Capture Your Photos offices. I wanted to put something there that was meaningful because I look at it a million times a day.

I’ve had this vision in my brain for a while of some type of display using old pictures of my grandparents, maybe metal prints, so that was the road I started down. At first, I started pulling some of my favorite pictures, but to be honest, I wasn’t feeling it. I have lots of ‘church photos’ (you know the old Olan Mills ones), and a few others, but I wasn’t falling in love yet.

Then… I saw some pictures of both of my grandmas that I’ve loved for a long time. One was my Grandma Breitenbach playing golf in high heels, and the other was my Grandma Crelly in a grass skirt with a huge smile on her face. I loved the idea of creating something using these pics.

Then… I remembered a photo I had just scanned of my husband’s grandma with waterskis, which fit in perfectly. And to make it even more perfect, I added a favorite photo of my mom in front of my grandparent’s station.

4 amazing and strong women that I admire, doing life.

Knowing that they all faced their own life challenges, this space is such a beautiful reminder for me of their resilience, how big they loved, and how they found joy.

I especially love that this display sits outside of the Capture Your Photos offices. As a female-owned business, it’s these women and others that have inspired me and have been role models my whole life.

This space now tells a story.

I always talk about the joy that photos bring, but they can be so much more. Do you have any photos that inspire you? How can you bring them into your daily life? I look forward to hearing your stories.
