Increase my child's self esteem? Yes, please.
How would you feel if I told you that I could increase your child's self esteem and help you improve your family relationships? Me, I would answer, yes please!
A while back, I participated in a webinar with Dr. Deborah Gilboa, a go-to expert on raising and educating young people, and although I've read the studies that tie self-esteem to family photos, her words really resonated with me.
In a nutshell, she claimed that family photos help parents raise respectful, responsible, and resilient young people...and here are just a few reasons why...
Family Photos teach RESPECT.
photos reinforce what matters (think about all of the photos taken during holidays and other gatherings)
photos remind us of important connections and relationships (grandparents, siblings, etc.)
Family Photos show RESPONSIBILITY
we frame photos and create albums and other photos projects of the things we value
organizing your photos demonstrates the value of archiving your family’s history
Family Photos build RESILIENCE
photos show that we try new things because we often take pictures the first time we try something
we take pictures of imperfect things a lot
we smile even when it's tough sometimes
When I first digitized my family’s old home movies, I was so excited to share them with my family. I’m not sure we had ever watched many of them, but I wasn’t sure how long they would keep their attention. We watched for 2 solid hours. We laughed. We smiled. We remembered.
Do I think those 2 hours made a difference? You betcha. My youngest was reminded of how adored she was when she was born. My other 2 got to relive their birthday parties when they were 7 and 11 and hopefully saw the care and love that went into them.
It can be so simple. An album. A framed photo. A video.
Let’s do that for our kids.
